7 Ways to Maintain a Healthy Heart

While research shows that genetics play a role in your risk for developing cardiovascular diseases, there are preventable measures you can take to stay healthy. Dr. Emefre Udo, Medical Director and Family Physician at MHHC Brooklyn, suggests 7 ways to improve your health:

  1. Monitor your blood pressure- high blood pressure puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the U.S. You should aim for a blood pressure goal of less than 130/80 mm Hg.
  2. Check your cholesterol- know your numbers! Your cholesterol numbers are important because it lets you know if you're at risk for heart disease. Cholesterol is a type of lipid (fat) that helps your body perform many important functions. But too much cholesterol in your blood is not good for you. Your total cholesterol should be below 200. Consult with your provider on how to manage your cholesterol.
  3. Screen for diabetes- the American Diabetes Association recommends screening for diabetes in adults aged 45 years or older and screening in persons with multiple risk factors like family history, race and ethnic background, regardless of age. Your hemoglobin A1C levels should be below 5.7.
  4. Check your weight- maintaining a healthy weight is important for your health. Excessive weight increases the amount of work that the heart has to perform which can raise your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, putting you at risk for developing diabetes. Your target Body Mass Index (BMI) should be below 30 kg/m.
  5. Avoid smoking- smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. Smoking affects almost every organ in your body.
  6. Monitor your stress level- unfortunately stress is something that we all experience and can have a negative effect on our health. Try to stay active through exercise, meditation, and maintaining a healthy social life.
  7. Discuss heart health risk factors with your family.
